19/02/2008 21:02:00 Essay Question: 5 reasons for exploration Desire for new trade routes to Asia o Medicines, silks, perfumes, and spices (some worth weight in gold)  trying to cut out expense of transportation o Problems with old trade route o Expensive (tolls) – charged by people on route o Bandits o Closed off Muslim world – lot of hostility between muslim and  Christian worlds, having to go all the way around o It’s overland – takes a lot of time  Emergence of large nation states (Ability to Finance) o Prior to 1450s most European countries made up of rival (sometimes  warring kingdoms) o The crusades had unwitting consequence, a lot of previous strong are  weak and allows men of less power to move in from lesser kingdoms,  the establishment of civilized nations in Europe o Can’t pool resources to finance exploration o Crusades made previously dominant lords weak, and new leaders  emerged o These leaders established nations o 1469, Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castille married and unified  the two kingdoms of Spain (unify and able to unify money as well)  example of this topic
