HI332: The Era of St. Francis de Sales, 1500-1650 Spring 2008 – TTh @ 9:30-10:45 Dr. Brennan Pursell Office: Dooling 257, Ext. 1226 Office Hours: M 11-12, 2-2:30, W 2-2:30 [email protected] Th 12:30-1:30, F 11-1 Learning Outcomes The goal of the course is for students to understand St. Francis de Sales in the context of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, the religious upheavals that shook the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and continue to influence the world today. After successful completion of the course, students will be able to articulate the roots of reform in the late medieval church and the arguments of Martin Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, the Anabaptists and other Protestant reformers. Equally they will know the Roman Catholic response, the great works of literature in the so-called Counter-Reformation, in particular by St. Ignatius Loyola, St. Teresa of Avila, and finally St. Francis de Sales.
