Dayspassed as the couple hid behind their bedroom door, contemplating whether or not they shouldeven attempt to show their faces after what they had done.The cold, lifeless room Macbeth hadbeen locking himself away in had little help with lifting his spirits. He paced back and forth eachday, questioning why he had done suchatrocious things. In his eyes, hiding away until thequestions regarding Banquo subsided was the only way for him to remain in the clear. LadyMacbeth,on the other hand, had made it very clear that the only reason she was keeping herselfcooped up in their suffocating room was to ensure that her husband didn’t drive himself madwith regrets. She had yet to realize that each night after the murders, she had beenfrolickingthrough the castle in her sleep. To Lady Macbeth, she was the only hope they had of ever gettingaway with their crimes successfully.One morning, they got the message notifying them about the funeral that was takingplace. This would be the first time that the couple even discussed showing themselves. LadyMacbeth began to express how they should attend in honor of Banquo, as it would surely lessentheir chances of being considered suspicious. Macbeth, of course, believed he didn’t have a sayso simply waited for the day to come.On the day of the funeral, it seemed thatthe castle rancold. It was completely quiet while the couple began to dress themselves to prepare for theirattendance. A heaviness seemed to fill the air, causing the tension between the people within theroom to grow.Macbeth slowly dressed himself, dreading the moment he would have to facedozens of people and attempt to mourn over the friend that he once had.His face was pale, andyou could see the shake of his hands as he began to button his coat up. “Was it worth it?” Hewhispered. Lady Macbeth sat up from her vanity, still applying her makeup calmly, “Was whatworth it?” she asked. “Was the power we oh so desired worth the killing of a friend? Was itworth the fear and regret I have in my heart?” Macbeth quickly began walking around the room,seemed to be falling apart at the seams as he thought of all the things he had done wrong. Lady
