BI 235 - Study Questions: Chapter 11: Fundamentals of the Nervous SystemThe following is my version of a study guide. Instead of a laundry list of things that you need to know, I havecreated study questions. I write these questions for you to answer as a means to redirect you to the importanttopics and concepts presented in the textbook and in lectures. The study questions are intended to make youthink about the course material and understand all aspects of the material. I believe that these questions are agood learning tool, well worth your time, and the best way to study for exams. These questions are designed toredirect your attention to the important concepts, topics and details of the presented material, and therefore thematerial that I will be testing on the exams. Talk through these questions with study partners – discussing thismaterial is a great way to learn. When you answer them, you should be sure to use your notes and textbook butbe careful not to simply copy from those materials. You are doing more to help your learning if you areanswering in your own words. Although I do not post written answers, I am happy to discuss the answers withyou. Concerning the depth of knowledge that will be tested on the midterms and final exam, please only beprepared to be tested on the depth addressed in lecture and in these study questions (if you are unsure about thelevel of detail, please view your lecture notes or ask me). The textbook contains much detail and bolded termsthat we did not address in these questions and therefore will not be testing. To get the most from these questions:1.Write out the answers in your own words (do not copy answers from another source).2.Supplement your answers with drawings.3.Answer the questions on each topic before you move on to the next topic.I will on occasion give you some “Big Picture” questions. When you answer these, try to not be so specific.Sometimes with all of the detail in anatomy & physiology, it helps to look at the big picture to understand thebasic concepts behind the details. The specific questions follow as “Details”.Please let me know if you have any questions – good luck and remember that your interest in the subject willonly help you to better learn the material. The summary tables and FOCUS figures in this chapter are pretty good for answering some of thesequestions. Please become very comfortable with the graph of the action potential.Chapter 11: Fundamentals of the Nervous System and Nervous Tissue4.Describe the overall organization of the nervous system. Describe the major divisions and the componentsthat make up each division (see flow chart from PowerPoint slide and/or textbook).
