Feb. 27 Summary – Fall of the wall, rise of the new world order Class notes: - loss/transition of bipolarity occurs and the US starts acting belligerent - Unipolarity begins with US who controls ¼ of world GDP and have largest military expenditures by a huge margin (many figures – between ½ - 2/3 of world) - Nations behave relative to their power, US now able to pursue aggressive foreign policy - Carter o Camp David Accords (1978): Egyptian-Israeli treaty, Egypt given lots of $ o Doctrine: no outside influence permitted in the Middle East o Iranian Rev. (1979) - Reagan o Iran Contra (1986): sell weapons to Iran, give $ to anti-leftist group in Nicaragua o Dramatically increased defense spending and pursued space warfare - Bush o Germany’s important and unification only possible if US keeps foot in Europe and if Germany is heavily integrated into European affairs - 3 conclusions: o leaders initiate change: tends to be false, Reagan played part, and Gorbachev didn’t mean to bring USSR down o economic systems: controlled economies fail and can’t keep up with capitalism o international system: USSR fell way behind US and competition became less possible - Bosnian crisis: US was no longer pumping $ into regions because no longer a threat from USSR, also no third party to enforce Balkans region - Iran-Iraq War: Iranian Revolution was at center on conflict, it threatened Iraq’s
