Lindsay Van Vuren Seat #15 MBIO 2815 2/28/08 The Damage of Ultraviolet Light on Microbial Growth 1. Abstract Ultraviolet light is a form of electromagnetic radiation that can be used to kill bacteria in order to preserve aseptic conditions in a laboratory or clinical setting. 24-hour Escherichia coli , 24-hour Bacillus subtilis , and 7-day Bacillus subtilis were put under ultraviolet light for certain time periods to see the effect on microbial growth. Escherichia coli showed the greatest decrease in growth over time. All three bacteria declined over longer periods of time under the ultraviolet lamp. Escherichia coli showed the most sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation, therefore concluding that ultraviolet light can be used to stop its DNA from replicating. Ultraviolet light can be used as a disinfectant because it kills bacteria. 2. Introduction Ultraviolet light has a shorter wavelength than visible light, and is a form of electromagnetic energy or radiation. There are three types of ultraviolet light: UV- A, UV-B, and UV-C. Of the three forms of ultra violet light, UV-A has the longest wavelength and UV-C has the shortest wavelength. UV-C is used in sterilization to effectively kill microorganisms. The bacteria used in this experiment were 24-hour Escherichia coli , 24-hour Bacillus subtilis , and 7-day Bacillus subtilis .
