As such, guests enjoyed a memorable and unique sight as well as dissonant, thematically relevant sensations of cold inside an otherwise warm and comfortable exhibition center. Background music appropriate to the theme, bits of candy, theme- consistent decorations, and invitations to explore unusual objects through the sense of touch are examples of ways that multiple senses can be stimulated in a variety of settings. The principles identiྰed by Pine and Gilmore (1999), when practically applied, can be thought of as a “technology” that may be used successfully by many organizations within the experience industry. That technology is readily applicable to many settings in which the intention of the experience industry professional is to stage encounters that yield memorable experiences for guests (Pine & Gilmore, 1999; Oh, Fiore, & Jeoung, 2007). The technology is robust and may be applied in commercial and noncommercial settings and successfully integrated with other techniques for programming and staging experiences. In staging a festival, for example, organizers might stage the event around Pine and Gilmore’s principles alone. In such an application, in addition to vital logistical concerns (e.g.,event promotion, transportation, safety, lodging, parking), organizers would attend to methods of immersing guests in a coherent and consistent theme, keeping staff in character as they carry out their responsibilities within appropriate theatrical forms, appealing to multiple senses, individualizing guest experiences, and making memorabilia available. In a heritage interpretation setting, interpreters might choose to build on Tilden’s (1977) principles by incorporating one or more principles from Pine and Gilmore (1999).
