October 15, 2007 Stephen L. Johnson USEPA Headquarters Ariel Rios Building 1200 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. Washington, DC 20460 Dear Mr. Johnson, Please protect the public from mercury pollution. Mercury buildup in fish is negatively effecting people and animals all over the country. We have known this since the 1950’s, yet still nothing is being done to clean up our planet and help save lives (Krabbenhoft and Rickert 1997). I am a student at Eckerd College on the Gulf of Mexico in Florida, and I also live on an island off the coat of Maine. The fishing industry is evident in my every day life, and I would like to know that I am safe when I eat local catches. In Maine, we have warnings about eating fish that is caught in our waters. Pike, Pickerel, Large and Smallmouth Bass, White Perch, and Lake and Brown Trout are all common to the area, but the state advises against eating these catches (The Maine Family Fish Guide 2007). The state has some great recreational fishing spots, yet we cannot eat what we
