In the beginning of the film everyone has dreams and ideas as to how their life will be. Sara imagines herself being a guest on her favorite infomercial, Harry and Marion are planning on saving enough money to open a store where Marion can sell her clothing, and Tyrone simply wants to have a better life. However, as they all gradually fall deeper into their addictions their dreams all take turns for the worse, essentially dying. The use of the changing seasons was somewhat indicative of what was happening the story. It starts off in the summer, which is associated with happiness and light. As each person fall into the trap of their drug it is fall which is often a metaphor used to change. At the end when everyone’s life has been ruined by their addiction, it is winter which is thought of as bleak and dark. Montages are also used. The way the montages are composed of extremely short shots reflects the desperation of the characters and the feeling of hallucinating. The split screen work in Requiem was used very well.
