Phys474 Assignment #2 SOLUTIONSDue Monday, Oct 5 at 2pmMarked out of 20.1)(7 marks)The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has fundamentally changed howwe view and analyze galaxies. Galaxy studies have moved from samples of a fewhundred to a few hundred thousand objects, allowing far more quantitative andstatistical analysis. However, it is still crucial to look at individual images ofnearby galaxies, since detailed studies of them are the foundation forunderstanding galaxy formation and evolution. SDSS images of galaxies from theThird Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies (RC3, deVaucouleurs et al. 1991), awell-known sample of nearby galaxies, are available from the following website:Examine the images for the following galaxies:NGC 7814: edge-on, red galaxy with dark central lane and prominent but smallbulge.SA(s)abNGC 936: red, smooth. barred with ring and disk. Hubble type SB0+(rs) is drivenby the bar and smooth disk appearance. The (rs) designates “transition”galaxies between those with and without rings.NGC 3020: clumpy, very blue spiral. Blue bar, very little bulge. ClassifiedSB(r)cdNGC 3034: smooth, blue disk, red central, with green features out of the plane ofthe disk, through bright yellow nucleus. Classified I0 as an irregular.Leo A: low surface brightness, featureless, resolved into many blue stars.Classified as IBmNGC 3377: smooth, featureless, red in colour. Inner disk or highly ellipticalisophote. rounder in outskirts. E5-6NGC 4406: featureless, red elliptical.E3
Describe what you see: comment on properties like morphology, structure, colour, symmetry. Comment on how the 2D projected shape relates to the likely3D shape. For each of the galaxies, give the NED homogenized galaxyclassification from and describe the features on
