Sarah Drumm Contemporary Sociological Theories September 20, 2007 Memo Two As a twenty two year old Rutgers student I play many roles. I am a student, a daughter, and a girlfriend among many other things. For each social situation I act differently, have different goals, and have different institutionalized norms. As a daughter I try and do what my Mother would like me to do, but as a student I am not interested in studying engineering or anything having to do with pharmaceuticals. As a student I want to further my education in graduate school and postpone marriage until after I’m completely done with my education. But as a girlfriend to a loving boyfriend of five years I would also like to be married now. Merton would most likely describe my situation as a conflict of goals and the culturally acceptable means of attaining them. My goal of furthering my studies and my career, conflicts somewhat with my goal of marriage and a family. And although I will always try to play the role of the perfect daughter, that role sometimes conflicts with my
