February 19, 2007 Things that don’t have exchange value: air, love, emotions Air has an important use value but doesn’t have an exchange value. Marx says the exchange value has to due with the labor value. Labor creates all exchange value. Price is not the exchange value, it’s labor time. Sugar is cheaper than diamonds because it is mass produced. Not always cheap, sugar used to be expensive when machine made sugar was a rarity. It takes more work to get a diamond therefore and it is highly sought after, therefore the price is higher. As an exchange value the table is a fetish. The table is given power. The fetish is an object that doesn’t have power of its own, to which humans bestow power. Difference between idols and objects is that the idols represent G-d. But the table or basket is just an object, it doesn’t represent anything. One doesn’t engage in any kind of social relationship between the producer or
