Monday, April 09, 2007 Simple Society according to Durkheim: categorized by mechanical solidarity. Conformity of thought and practices Complex = organic solidarity. People do different things. Australian tribes of 1913 and before that are simple mechanical societies compared to Paris. These societies can be compared because the foundations of aboriginal religions are similar to the foundations of religion in Paris. Religion has two important characteristics: Beliefs & rites - Beliefs: states of opinion. Present in the form of representation - Rites: modes of conduct. What men should do with sacred objects All religion and beliefs have the sacred and profane. EG: Sacred: torah, ten commandments, holy water, rosary beads, k’aba stone EG: Profane: un-kosher food, premarital sex, alcohol, humans All religious beliefs have the sacred/profane difference. Religious beliefs are the representations which express the nature of the sacred things and their relation with each other or with the profane things. Beliefs and rites when put together become a system and become a religion
