Sarah Drumm Development of Sociological Theory 920:313:12 Assignment 1 Estranged Labor With estranged labor the worker becomes an even cheaper “commodity” the more commodities he produces. The more that a worker produces, the cheaper his work becomes. Also, the more a worker produces the more alienated he becomes from his work. This was evident in the pig iron factory as well as in the Ford factory. Examples of estranged labor and alienation can be seen in the documentary “On the Line” and in the Harry Braverman article on Taylorism. I would venture to say that one could see signs of Alienation of man from his nature, Alienation of man from himself, Alienation of man from his species, and Alienation of man from man. A prime example of estranged labor and alienation is shown in the Harry Braverman article on Taylorism. The workers in the pig iron factory were forced to increase their personal production from twelve tons a day to an almost inhuman forty seven tons of pig iron a day.
