Sarah Drumm Development of Sociological Theory Assignment 3 The fetishism of commodity is something that dictates our lives by hiding the personal relationships behind the commodity. The fetish commodity hides the processes behind making an object. We no longer have a relationship with the laborer or producer of the commodity. For example when one purchases a table from Ikea we no longer know the creator of the item. Presumably the design process is still controlled by one person behind a desk in the Ikea Corporation, but as a consumer we have no personal connection to him. Tables used to be handmade by a skilled carpenter who would bring his craft into the marketplace for sale or trade. A consumer would know exactly where the product was coming from. Now there is no personal connection between a product and buyer. It has been lost in a sea of marketing and franchises. The t-shirt in the documentary “T-shirt Travels” is a commodity fetish.
