Sarah Drumm Development of Social Theory Assignment 5 Emile Durkheim said “the term suicide is applied to all cases of death resulting directly or indirectly from a positive or negative act of the victim himself, which he knows will produce this result (Suicide. p. 44).” According to Durkheim Cases of death, Direct or indirect result, positive or negative act, the victim, and knowledge of the result are all necessary components in order to be defined as a suicide. The first half of Durkheim’s definition is “any death which is the direct or indirect result of a positive or negative act accomplished by the victim himself. Thus suicide has to result in the death of the victim. An attempt at suicide does not count as suicide until the victim is dead. So if a person jumps off a bridge intending to die but lives then they did not commit suicide. The death can be a direct or indirect result, a positive or negative act of the victim himself. Thus a victim can directly and positively take a gun to his head and shoot
