Sarah Drumm Development of Sociological Theory Assignment 7 April 18, 2007 For Durkheim religion is synonymous with society. He defines religion as being a unified system of ideas and practices and believes that these ideas and practices correlate with the ideas and practices of society. For him, the morals of religion represent the morals of the society. The in class video on Hinduism is a perfect example of how religion represents the morals of a society. From what I learned from the video, Hinduism is a very diverse and peaceful religion. I was intrigued to learn that Hinduism is one of the most accepting religions in the world and that the religion is very much a part of the Indian society. Part of the reason for it’s diversity and it’s acceptance of other religions is that the Hindus believe that there are many ways to reach God and that all of them are good.
