Sarah Drumm Development of Social Theory Assignment 8 Max Weber argues that ideas have the power to create economic systems. He argued that the spirit of capitalism came before capitalism. He believed that the protestant work ethic led to an American Capitalist society and that the tenet of predestination in the Protestant religion led to an individualized capitalist society. Marx, on the other hand, argues from a materialist viewpoint. Marx felt that the economic system was built on material changes and that ideas came from the ideas of the ruling class. Weber would argue that the ideas were there to begin with and that the idea of the protestant work ethic is what shaped capitalism. The major difference between these two thinkers was that Weber argued from the historical standpoint that the American idea of the protestant work ethic is what led to capitalism while Marx argued from the materialist standpoint that the economic system evolved due to material changes much the same as in
