Thomas Chang #23 Liar Poker Essay February 28, 2008 The industry of investment banking is a world of greed and manipulation of human relationships. In this industry, risk and gambles must be taken to make personal gains wealth. These themes from Liar’s Poker are universal themes that can be seen in all forms of media including recent movies. In The Departed , the movie is based on lies and deception to maintain one’s position in the world. Just as Michael Lewis “spent much of my working life inventing logical lies,” the same can be applied towards the characters of The Departed . Sullivan, an informant for the crime lord Costello, lies his way through academy school and becomes a cop in order to protect Costello. He lives his life through manipulation and deception by being an insider for the crime world. On the contrary, Costigan Jr. is an undercover cop working under Costello to be an inside man for the police.

Unformatted text preview: The lives of Costigan and Sullivan are both ultimately intertwined and a struggle of maintaining each other’s false identities are tested. As the story develops and the view knows the true identity of both moles, the lies and manipulations needed to keep ones identity and maintaining each individual’s personal well-being is pushed to the limits. In the end, the movie’s ultimate theme of deception is revealed as Costello himself is also working for someone as a FBI informant. The Departed concludes with a series of deaths for everyone who attempted to hide his identity.
