From Ellis to JFK People from all over the world come to America in search of a better life than what their used to. America is known as the land of the free as well as the land of opportunity and the land of diversity. Adjusting to life in America takes some time however and many people are faced with prejudice. It can be difficult to get a steady well paying job especially if you’re new to this society. Italians are just one of the many ethnic groups that had to adjust to a different life than they were used to. Italians were a significant number of the people immigrating in the early 1900’s. A big reason that they came to America was because of overpopulation in the area south of Rome. Many of the peasants were forced to pay taxes on their lands that they could not afford and had no choice but to move out. American agriculture, particularly the production of grain, lowered the value of Italian crops such as wheat. This made it nearly impossible for Italians to make enough money to support their own families. Many of the Italian immigrants stayed in New York City upon arrival. Originally
