Although this group of odd ­looking personages was doing a fun activity, such as bowling, they did not speak, laugh or show any trace of any emotion. Instead of smiling and laughing with one another, they remained silent. Specifically, in this quotation, the description “melancholy party of pleasure” seems to act as somewhat of an oxymoron, which is exactly what the group of odd ­looking personages were to Rip Van Winkle. 14. The relationship between identity and government depends on the type of government one has in their country. For example, the impact on an individual’s identity varies between a democratic government as opposed to a more controlled government, for example a communistic one. An individual that is raised in a government like America’s has minor effects on the development of their identity. Some things citizens in America experience is choosing what political party fits best with their identity depending on their beliefs and values. Through this, their identity is formed based on their own beliefs, not the government’s. Although many people tend to be influenced by the government and political parties, they are still forced to make a decision between political parties and voting....
