Lauren Bosco Honors Ethics 10/2/12 Singer and Steinback All Animals are Equal 1. Singer thinks that our treatment of animals is characterized by speciesism. What does he mean by speciesism? Why, according to Singer, is speciesism as unacceptable as sexism or racism? Singer thinks that we treat animals on a different level because of speciesism. Singer defines speciesism as a prejudice or attitude of bias in favor of the interest of members of one’s own species and against those of members of other species. Singer points out, however, that the basic principle of equality does not require equal or identical treatment but instead requires equal consideration. He says if the demand for equality were based on the actual equality of all human beings, we would have to stop demanding equality. “If possessing a higher degree of intelligence does not entitle one human to use another for his or her own ends, how can it entitle humans to exploit nonhumans for the same purpose?” 2.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
