Lauren Bosco 9/12/12 Honors Ethics Rachels and Franzen Rachels: The Challenge of Cultural Relativism 1. In this essay, Rachels offers various criticisms of the "cultural differences argument." One argument he makes is that the conclusion doesn't follow from the premise. How does this argument work? The argument begins with facts about cultures and then ends up drawing a conclusion about morality. The fact is ultimately that different cultures have different moral codes and the conclusion is therefore that there is no objective proof. The problem is that just because the cultures disagreed doesn’t mean there is no objective truth to the matter. 2. Rachels also points out that cultural relativism is problematic insofar as it leads to troubling consequences. What are these consequences and how do they cause problems for the theory of cultural relativism? Cultural relativism is problematic because it stops us from criticizing our own society’s code and thinking of ways to make it better.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
