History Final Test Review The Popular Front French elections of May/June 1936, Leon Blum was the leader of the French Socialist Party, the election overestimated the Popular Front’s success which exaggerated the Right’s fears and the Left’s expectations, under this system France was the first to recognize leisure as a basic social right with paid family vacation. Spain had the only other Popular Front gov’t in Europe. Léon Blum – 1936 leader of French Popular Front Socialists, spring 1947, along with Monnet, obtained help from the USA for post-war reconstruction through renunciation of French war debts to the USA, loans from the USA, and a promise of surplus goods, Leon Blum’s plans to remedy the depression failed, he brought in the idea of paid vacation time, he gave 3 minor cabinet positions to women. Spanish constitution of 1931 – not through a revolution, occurred after King Alfonso XIII left in 1931 when democrats and reformist socialists created the constitution based on republican French and Weimar examples, the Spanish Republic under this constitution passed through 3 stages, 1. Left majority during “red biennium” (October 1931-November 1933), 2. Center-Right coalition during “black biennium” (1934-1936), 3. Popular Front coalition in February 1936. Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936 and that was the end of the Spanish Republic. Condor Legion – November 1936, during Spanish Civil War, German air unit manned by 6000 men (also had artillery and tanks) recruited along with Italy by Spanish insurgents, in its first
