Jeremy Reis 11/25/07 World Literature Clothes is a literary short story that uses many different themes, ideas, and images throughout the story. American Culture is a central and intricate theme in the story clothes. Divakaruni uses American Culture to portray a sense of danger and mystery as the character moves to America. Divakaruni uses the way California looks like on a globe to give the reader what the narrator was feeling. On page 18, the narrator’s father point out California on the map and Divakaruni uses the words “chunky pink wedge on the side of a multicolored slab”. The words used give a sense of disgust and bewilderment. Divakaruni uses a chunky pink wedge to portray California and the words seem to be talking about how fat the state looks. This analogy might be talking about how we as Americans are overweight. The words used for the United States are multicolored slab. The word multicolored refers to the diversity in the United States. The main character in Clothes is married to a man in America who owns a gas station. Divakaruni compares the gas station in America to the stores in India.
