Leyla Collazzo Hazard ETHN 149 February 22, 2013 Lumumba The movie Lumumba follows Patrice Lumumba through his time as Prime Minister in the Congo. The Congo was newly independent from the Belgian’s and it was trying to settle. Now that the Congo is independent, Lumumba tries to get the Congo back on its feet and to unify Africa. As he tries to unify the country and spark change for Africa, he is blocked by the government. He thinks that he has gained independence and can do as he likes when in reality he is controlled by the government and other countries. Soon after Lumumba becomes Prime Minister Katanga and Kasai secedes from the Congo. After this happens Lumumba declares that “secession is treason” and sends an army into the succeeded provinces to try and unite the Congo once again. The government, however, does not like this and declares that Lumumba has betrayed his country by starting the war. This is when Lumumba tries to make an escape because he is being overthrown. He was democratically elected, but once he was overthrown the government chose the next Prime Minister. Lumumba was soon captured by the government and sentenced to death. They did not want him sharing his ideas anymore so the silenced him.
