ABE 484/584 CHOI HW3 1. [ Window ] A double-glazed window has two sheets of glass separated by a thin layer of air. The air gap is thin enough so that convection between the glass panes may be neglected. Determine the reduction in heat transfer when a double-glazed window replaces a single-glazed window. The window glass is 0.4 cm thick, the outside convective heat transfer coefficient is 12 W/m 2 o C, the inside coefficient is 6 W/m 2 o C, and the air gap is 0.5 cm thick. CHOI 2. [ Hay bales ] A farmer produces hay for the market. His hay baler forms long cylindrical hay bales about 12 in in diameter. As the hay cures, heat is uniformly generated at a measured rate of 800 Btu/(h ft 3 ). If the outside surface temperature of the bale is 90 o F and k = 0.25 Btu/(h ft o F), what is the maximum temperature within the bale?
