Parnell 1 Jessica Parnell Art History#10 Dr. Phillip Eliasoph Short Essay #2 14 November 2006 Classic and Current: Unbroken Chain Often times, the meanings of the terms classic and classical are confused. Our Stokstad textbook makes the distinction between the two words by stating that: Classical refers to the culture of ancient Greece and Rome. The word may also mean in the style of ancient Greece and Rome. In the most general usage, a ‘classic’ is something –perhaps a literary work, a car, or a film-of lasting quality and universal significance,”(139). In contrast to previous Egyptian and Mesopotamian education, education in early ancient Greece lacked text. Greek education was based upon three separate aspects; gymnastike’ , mousike’ and grammata . This idea is represented through Socrates’ quote, “What, then, is our education? Or is it hard to find a better than that which long time has discovered-which is, I suppose, gymnastics for the body, and for the soul, music?” -Socrates Through this quote the foundation of education in early Greece is expressed. The Greeks focused on the more creative aspects of education. They believed
