White ENW 11: Composition Paper#1 : This Boys Life 9/29/2006 Violence in Relation to This Boys Life When reading the book This Boys Life a memoir by Tobias Wolff one could distinguish many different types of violence. Violence or the potential for violence is important to the book as well as Wolff’s life in many different ways. The violence shared among Tobias, his mother Rosemary, and the men living with them is just one example of the violence portrayed in the memoir. Another striking occurrence is the violence between Tobias and friends such as Arthur or Tobias’ pet dog Champ. In the book, potential violence also plays a large part in the violence that is expressed in Tobias’ life. In this memoir, violence was often associated with a father figure such as Dwight. Dwight had a strange love for violence. When Dwight found out that Tobias had gotten into a fight with another boy named Arthur, he asked him “Who won?” and then made Tobias tell him the story of the fight over and over again many times (113). Tobias wanted Dwight to except him and to be proud of him just like a father so much that he lied to him and told him that he had won the fight and even described the “swollen eye”
