Author: Leslie Gelb Summary: In this view point essay by Leslie Gelb who is the president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations and was the senior official under Johnson and Carter; she addresses the current issues in Iraq, Bush’s strategy and the Democrat’s idea of success. Often, the comparison is made to the 1975 war in Vietnam and how that affected the United States, this is an argument by precedent. She also brings up how unsuccessful the war in Vietnam was and how it led to World War II three years later.

Unformatted text preview: If we are successful in Iraq, they have many surrounding allies that we do not want to upset such as the Kurds, Saudis, Turks, and Jordanians. She also states that even though everyone would like to think that America will come out on top in Iraq, it does not look like that is going to happen. A big concern is what will happen when we pull our troops out, we should speak of defeat in hopes that it will minimize the violence. Gelb believes t hat in order to save the U.S diplomacy we need to structure regional peace among the states which will help lessen the wrath of defeat....
