2 Running Head: Experiential Versus Narrative Family Therapies Introduction There are many different types of therapeutic techniques. Experiential therapy focuses on experiences of the “here and now,” whereas narrative family therapy focuses on retelling one’s story to understand why one behaves in certain ways. The purpose of this paper is to summarize key points of both experiential family therapy and narrative family therapy. Furthermore, compare and contrast noting the strengths and weakness of each. Experiential Therapy Experiential therapy centers on actual involvement with various types of experiences, including emotional processing, interaction with others, creativity, and reflections of events beyond traditional talk therapy (American Addiction Centers, 2020). The underlying assumption of experiential therapy is that the way to promote the growth of an individual and family attachment is to free affects and impulses. This approach helps people lower their defenses and come together with more immediacy and authenticity (Nichols & Davis, 2020). With experiential therapy, it is important for the therapist to use their own personality, spontaneity, and creativity. This approach focuses on emotions, and by establishing an efficient bond with the family, it holds importance for revealing emotions.(Cag & Voltan Acar 2015) Narrative Therapy
