Response: Benton Museum of Art Charles Hagen Ferry to Naoshima Colour Print, 2007 Ferry to Naoshima is a colour print done by Charles Hagen. While quickly glimpsing all of the works exhibited at the Benton, it is not an exaggeration to say that this is the one piece that I did a double take on. Not only because of the vivid turquoise and blue tones that run wildly and prevalently in the picture, but also because of the way that I found I could relate to the situation itself. The picture depicts a man in a ferry heading towards the Japanese Island of Naoshima. He is wearing business clothes and lying on a bench, next to which are his shoes and a briefcase. It is not the very context of the picture that appeals to me, but rather the principles involved. In the background of this picture is a very urban setting, there are numerous buildings and advertisements, one of which clearly says Yamaha. It just lays out an impression of a demanding and hectic life, something like my own. Living a life that is
