Patrick J Sullivan 3/21/07 Engwrit 112 Critical Essay The Science of Shopping The Science of Shopping bombards the reader with different types of punctuation and word choice that describes how intensely shoppers are watched. One part stands out where Paco is explaining how his system of surveillance works, the author describes how Paco explains the complex network facts gathered from the surveillance videos. The facts “ come tumbling out when he talks, and, because he speaks with a slight hesitation – lingering over the first syllable in, for example, “re-tail” or “de-sign” – he draws you in, and you find yourself truly hanging on his works” (Gladwell 222). In this passage, the punctuation varies greatly, but the variation helps achieve its goal of describing how Paco speaks. Paco’s breaking up of certain words captivates the person who is listening to him. By describing Paco’s speech the reader is able to hear Paco’s words in their head which aides in understanding how this man’s, who is studying your shopping habits, brain works. The way Gladwell describes how Paco recounts information from the videos shows exactly how tentative the subject is because nothing is concrete in the sense that you will never know what the consumer will do.
