Patrick Sullivan 10/26/06 Writing Prompt # 2 In modern USA, there are millions of different ethnicities but at the beginning of the 19 th century, that was not the case. Pre World War II, the few categories that the millions of Americans fell into were, White Protestants, Negroes, Indians, and in general, Immigrants. And for the majority, all but the White Protestants were extremely poor. But World War II changed all of these pre-conceived notions after the U.S. Army integrated minorities into their post war rewards. Many of the minority recruits joined the Army with the expectation of receiving money for education as well as one year of unemployment compensation. But the most important part of the GI Bill was low interest, zero down payment home loans for servicemen. Instead minority servicemen returned to a country ungrateful for their duties as a minority in the armed forces. When many colored minorities went to collect their money from the GI Bill that was promised, they were denied. However, when a white Jewish man went to claim his part of the GI Bill, he
