Jennifer Chinn T.A. Jessica Stankiss Section: Monday 12:00 Opera Assignment: Gianni Schicchi Giacomo Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi really opened my eyes to the extreme diversity of the opera genre. Typically, opera is presented as deeply emotional, serious, and with complex plots and characters; however, this particular opera was comical, fast- paced, and straightforward. The simplicity of the plot was emphasized through the single setting of Buoso Donati’s bedroom, and it made it much easier for the audience to follow along with the storyline. The situational irony of Puccini’s opera made me momentarily forget that I was watching opera instead of a television series. I found the dramatic irony in the story of this opera to be especially successful and enjoyable when we see the Donati family react with excessive horror as their hopes to inherit Buoso’s riches are shattered by his will. Also, the expressions and emotions portrayed by the actors in the opera highlight the moments of comedy perfectly.
