Review: The Form of a Film Creates expectations and patterns : ex: shot1: a woman is getting ready in her apartment; shot2: a man is getting ready in his apartment; shot3: woman leaves her apartment; shot4: man leaves his apartment: Fulfilled : the pattern makes us expect that they will meet: they do Contradicted : the pattern is not fulfilled > they don’t meet Films more commonly praised both Fulfill and Contradict expectations and patterns > if fulfilled too often, the film is not interesting > if contradicted too often, audience loses interest, does not connect with film. Expectations come from: Films you have seen Life experiences Other art forms Film Form helps develop Themes in films / usually through repetition > REPETITION is crucial in all art forms > when something is repeated, a theme starts to develop. Form usually strives for unity, coherence, progression, and balance.

One of the ways to Analyze Form Plot segmentation : Written outline of the film that breaks it into its major and minor parts Usually broken into scenes. Scene : A continuous block of storytelling either set in a single location or following a particular character. The end of a scene is typically marked by a change in location, style, or time. A Plot Segmentation allows you to look for relationships between the various parts of the film > most importantly you will be able to clearly see the whole film and find PATTERNS, REPETITIONS, and DEVELOPMENT of the film from beginning to the end.
