Manifest Destiny : The belief that the United States was meant to extend across the continent from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. b. Gadsden Purchase : A region in the southern parts of present-day Arizona and New Mexico that was bought from Mexico in 1853. c. Sam Houston : (1793 – 1863) An American soldier and statesman. He helped Texas win its independence from Mexico. He was the president of Texas while it was an independent country and served as a U.S. senator after Texas joined the United States. d. Republic of Texas : An independent nation that existed from 1836 to 1845 after winning its independence from Mexico. It included all of present-day Texas and parts of New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming. Texas joined the United States in 1845 and gave the federal government all of the lands outside its current borders. e. annexation : The joining of a territory with another country. f. Mexican-American War : A war fought between the United States and Mexico from 1846 to 1848. Mexico declared war after the Mexican territory of Texas was annexed, or added, to the United States. The war led Mexico to lose over half of its territory to the United States. g. Wilmot Proviso : An addition to a congressional bill that would have made slavery illegal in any territory that the United States received from Mexico. It did not pass but was one of the events leading to the Civil War. h. Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo : The peace treaty that ended the war between the United States and Mexico in 1848. The treaty set the Rio Grande and the Gila River as the border between the two countries. The United States paid $15 million for parts of present-day Texas, California, and other states in the Southwest United States. i. James K. Polk : (1795 - 1849) The 11th president of the United States. He supported annexation of Texas and led America through the Mexican-American War. 2.
