Tiffany Wang 6-20 Trinity Alualu 6-1 Cody Maikai 6-__ Mass Hysteria Mass Hysteria mainly occurs in small, isolated communities. They frequently happen in enclosed schools, factories, and hospitals. Mass Hysteria is when a group of people simultaneously show similar hysterical and crazy symptom. Some of the physical effect from Mass hysteria is headaches, nausea, dizziness, or a trance-like state, and seizure-like movements (“What is Mass Hysteria”). The symptoms spread with incredible speed and disappears quickly. The general Mass Hysteria can also be known as mass delusion, where a group of people become controlled by irrational beliefs or moral panic. When there is no scientific cause found for these riots or problem it is labeled as Mass Hysteria. This mostly occurs to females and children. Some factors that contribute to hysteria are rumors that are spread, high level of public stress, and shared cultural beliefs of stereotypes (Mass Hysteria: Anxiety Hysteria and Motor Hysteria). There are two types of Mass hysteria, anxiety hysteria and motor hysteria. Anxiety hysteria is shorter then motor hysteria. It usually lasts only a day. The symptoms are similar to Mass hysteria which is nausea, headache, dizziness, and physical weakness. What often happens is a complaint of a single member of the group such as they don’t feel well and others will begin to show the same symptoms (“What is Mass Hysteria”). Motor Hysteria takes a longer time to spread and to subside. Motor hysteria is characterized by trance likes states, seizure-like movements and uncontrolled outbursts (Mass Hysteria: Anxiety Hysteria and Motor Hysteria).
