Es 133 Chapter 10 Notes Origin of Modern Astronomy o Aristarchus first suggested that the Sun was the center of the universe. o Much of our knowledge of Greek astronomy comes from a 13=volume treatise, Almagest (the great work) that was compiled by Ptolemy in A.D. 141 (Ptolemaic system). o The Ptolemaic system was geocentric. It accounted for the retrograde motion observed in the planets. o The reason for the retrograde motion is the Earth has a faster orbital speed than the planets farther from the Sun. o Copernicus was the first great astronomer after the Middle Ages. He concluded that Earth is a planet, like the other observed, all rotating around the Sun. o Tycho Brahe was a Danish astronomer who catalogued the precise positions of many heavenly bodies. He later was the mentor for Johannes Kepler. o Johannes Kepler derived three basic laws for planetary motion, based largely on the observations of Tycho Brahe. o Kepler’s first law of planetary motion is: o The path of the each planet around the Sun is an ellipse, with the Sun at one focus. The other focus is symmetrically located at the opposite end of the ellipse.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
