10.17.2006 Probing the interior o By studying how seismic waves travel through the Earth, researchers determine the interior structure We learned that there is a liquid core S-waves do not propagate through liquids We learned that in the center, the core is solid P-waves that go through the center of the earth speed up relative to those that go through just a bit off-center’ Density of the earth increases dramatically as you go further in o Density of water is 1000 kg/m^3 o The average density of the earth is -5500 kg/m^3 o Inside to out- solid core, liquid core, mantle, crust Earth was most likely molten early in history o Earth formed 4.6 billion years ago(4.6 x 10^9) o Energy sources to keep earth molten throughout Decay of radioactive isotopes from early solar system Plate tectonics o Earth’s lithosphere(crust and upper mantle) is broken into a series of large moving plate Continental plates are composed of less dense granite rocks
