02/25/08 Experiment Report: Studying the pH of Strong Acid, Weak Acid, Salt, and Buffer Solutions PURPOSE: The purpose of this lab was to explore more deeply the pH of various solutions. For instance, though possibly non-intentional, this experiment revealed the faultiness of the pH meters by comparing theoretical pH levels and actual pH levels of different concentrations of HCl solutions. This experiment also lead to calculating the hydrolysis constant of NH 4 Cl, which is simply finding the equilibrium constant of the salt as it reacts with water. Finally we developed a buffer solution and compared the pH of this buffer solution and the pH of the same solution mixed with a HCl (a strong acid) and NaOH (a strong base). If the pH doesn’t change by more than .1 unit, then the buffer solution is a good buffer solution, however; if the system changes by more than .1 pH unit or more than 1 pKa unit, then the solution is a poor buffer solution.
