Lab Partner: Lab Section: Date: 01/12/08 Understanding Motion I & II; Measuring the Acceleration of a Freely Falling Picket Fence Abstract: The objective of this experiment was to establish the relationships between the motion of an object and its position on a graph, then understand the motion of an object and a graph of velocity and time for a moving object. Finally we were supposed to measure the acceleration due to gravity of a “picket fence” dropped through a photogate. Our results were very close to the set answers on the graphs we were trying to achieve. In the first experiment, the desired slope should have been .175 m/s, and we achieved .178 m/s +-9.4E-3 m/s, where in the second experiment our ideal acceleration was -.1 m/s 2 and we achieved an acceleration of -.225 m/s 2 exact. Finally, in our last experiment, we were supposed to achieve 9.81 m/s 2 and we achieved an acceleration of 9.7 m/s 2 . Theory:
