03/31/08 Thermodynamics of KNO 3 Dissolving in Water PURPOSE: The purpose of this lab is to measure the solubility of potassium nitrate is water at several temperatures, then calculate the K sp G, H, and S for potassium nitrate dissolving in water. SAFETY: 1. Always wear safety goggles. 2. Handle glassware with care. 3. KNO 3 is an oxidant and an irritant. PROCEDURE: 1. Assemble a hot water bath as shown in Figure 1. Weight 20g of KNO 3 then transfer to test tube. 2. Add 15mL of distilled water and heat test tube in hot water bath. Determine volume of KNO 3 using another test tube. 3. Record temperature when crystals first appear, then add 5 mL of distilled water to the test tube. 4. Remove test tube from hot water bath and allow to cool, then record temperature when

The process of KNO 3 dissolving in water should be spontaneous since the KNO 3 is becoming more disorganized and the free energy change should be negative. 2. A saturated solution is when there is un-dissolved solid in equilibrium with its dissolved ions. 3. 4. As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
