The1935Constitution , which featured a political system virtually identical to the American one, become operative. The system called for a President to be elected at large for a –year term, a bicameral Congress, and an independent Judiciary. The 1973 Constitution functioned as an authoritarian presidential system, with all the real power concentrated in the hands of the president, with the backing of the constitution. The 1987 Constitution established a representative democracy with power divided among three separate and independent branches of Government: The Executive, a bicameral Legislature, and the Judiciary.
