SOC 432 – Urban Community Spring 2007 Review Sheet – Final Exam For the final examination, students should be prepared to answer any of the following short- answer or essay questions. The exam will consist of ten short-answer questions, worth 5 points each, and two essay questions, worth 25 points each (100 points total). All questions on the examination will be selected from this list. The midterm exam will be administered on Friday, May 4 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Please bring a Blue Book for the exam as well. Short-Answer Questions (meant to be answered in one paragraph) 1. What is an example of a micro-level approach to urban sociology? Individual / personal level of analysis Ex: public space – urban encounters primarily w/ strangers (on sidewalks in stores) Street smarts – physical spacing / proximity, drawing unwanted attention 2. What is an example of a macro-level approach to urban sociology? Broader / city to societal level Ex: “creative class” – workers who add economic value through their creativity cities compete for the younger, highly educated workers w/ distinctive lifestyle they seek out cultural amenities, entertainment, high-tech areas, and tolerant of diversity 3. What are the differing supply-side and demand-side views of the history of American suburbanization? Supply-Side – what counts instead are networks of business people / gov officials who
