Position paper #1: On the Relationship between Fiction and the Government of people In this article On the Relationship between Fiction and the Government of people by Liang Qichao, Liang expressed his belief in the manipulative power of fiction on the Chinese people, even crediting a “reformation of the government to a revolution in fiction” (81). I believe that although fiction do have, to some extent, influences on people, it is not manipulative enough to start a reformation of the government or renovation of the people especially in the 21 st century. Since there is a hundred-year gap between present day and the year when this article was published, many things, such as technologies and scientific discoveries, have created a significant difference between the past and present making it hard for me to fully understand the world Liang lived in and his arguments on the influences of fiction. According to Liang, fiction has “four powers to influence the way of man, and the four powers are: thurification, immersion, stimulation and lifting” (76-77). Although the four powers
