Page 1139-1148 THE REVOLUTION IN TECHNOLOGY The Information Age: Television and Computers o Information technology catalyzed social and political change in these postindustrial decades just as innovations in textile making and the spread of railroads had in the 19 th century The Space Age o When the Soviets launched the satellite Sputnik in 1957, they ignited competition with the US that was quickly labeled the space race o JFK became determined to beat the Soviets in space by putting a man on the moon by the end of the1960s The result was increasingly complex space flights that tested humans’ ability to survive the process of space exploration, including weightlessness o July 1969, a worldwide television audience watched as US astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin walked on the moon’s surface – the climactic moment in the space race o The space age grew out of the cold war concerns, but it also offered the possibility of advances in rocket technology allowed for powerful and destructive missiles, it also promoted international efforts First commercial communications satellite, Intelsat I END OF 1139-1148 Page 1148-1166 THE NEW WORKER In both the US and Soviet blocs, a new kind of working class emerged, consisting of white-collar service personnel o The ranks of service workers swelled with researchers, health-care and medical workers, technicians, planners, and government functionaries Postindustrial work life had some different ingredients in the Soviet bloc
