THE CAUSES OF PHYSICAL FATIGUE Depletion of Products Required by the Energy Systems to Produce ATP: Phosphocreatine (PC) Depletion At high levels of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) the phosphate from PC is needed to re-synthesize ATP. When PC stores deplete into the cytoplasm of muscle cells, the intensity of the activity must lower as the athlete relies on another slower energy system for the production of ATP. Phosphocreatine (PC) Depletion Adaptations Learning to begin an activity with a slower energy at a lower MVC where other systems can help provide ATP to make sure the PC is not depleted. EX. Starting a 800m race slow and finishing fast and strong. Glycogen Depletion Muscle glycogen is the primary source for ATP re-synthesis for both Glycolytic and Oxidative systems when an athlete is performing at a sub-maximal MVC for a long period of time. Stores of muscle and liver glycogen can fuel an athlete for about 1 ½ -2 hours of sustained sub-maximal MVC. “Hitting the wall” for distance athletes around this time
