MUSCLE FIBRE TYPES and THEIR ENERGY SYSTEMS POWERPOINT WORKSHEET 1. Not all muscle fibres are created the same and not all ATP is manufactured the same way. Different people have different amounts of the various muscle fibre types, and this plays a role in the activity(s)/sport(s) people choose to do. 2. Specific Motor Units (and their corresponding efferent/motor neurons) innervate specific muscle fibres and are recruited based on the needs of the activity/sport. 3. Copy the chart found on slide #6 below: 4. The average person has a 50-50 ratio of fast twitch and slow twitch muscle fibres. However, many athletes have a different ratio with endurance athletes having more slow twitch muscle fibres, and power/explosive athletes having more fast twitch muscle fibres. 5. Power/Explosive athletes with a greater ratio of Fast Glycolytic (Type IIB) Muscle Fibres will have a muscular physical appearance than endurance athletes because these muscle fibres have a greater size, in diameter , than the other muscle fibre types.
