Have you ever been at a party where there was a bowl of snack mix like the one pictured in Figure 1 ? You probably sampled the mixture and found that there was at least one item that you liked more than the others. If so, you may have been inclined to pick out the desired snack or leave behind the less desirable ones. This is usually easily done because the snack items are different in their appearance and size. Scientists take a very similar approach when separating desired components from materials found in nature or generated in a lab when they want to isolate a pure substance.
